Deposit

When you agree to rent a property you will be asked for a deposit. In England and Wales this cannot be more than four weeks’ rent. Throughout the UK, it has to be held in an approved tenancy deposit scheme (TDP) and your landlord must tell you in writing where that is. If they do not, they are breaking the law and can be forced to pay you money. When you move out, there is often a dispute about the state of the place. The landlord may demand money to redecorate or replace carpets or make good damage. They will use money from your deposit for that. You can apply for the return of your deposit and challenge that decision. All that should be made clear when you first move in.
